Why keep a maintenance logbook in France

In France, a passenger car’s roadworthiness test is 4 years after first registration, then every 2 years. Between visits, the logbook — paper or digital — proves oil, brakes, tyres and manufacturer recalls were done. Without dates or mileage, a buyer discounts, and an inspection centre has no history for a warning light or a retest.

A useful logbook is not a shopping list. For each job, note the date, km, part or fluid, workshop and TTC amount. Keep the invoice (PDF is enough). That file serves the manufacturer warranty, an expert, and resale: a complete history often weighs more than an option or a sunroof.

The real cost of a car is not the sticker price. Fuel or electricity, insurance, servicing, tyres, depreciation and, on a new buy, possibly the CO₂ / weight malus and registration tax (carte grise): that is total cost of ownership (TCO).
